Benefits of installing RFID locks for office

RFID locksRFID locks are gaining a foothold in both residential and commercial settings in recent years. These electronic access control systems offer huge benefits by offering improved security and convenience. In this blog post, we are going to discuss the technology behind RFID locks and what are benefits of installing these systems for your office.

What is RFID technology?

It is short for Radio Frequency Identification. Let’s, for the sake of simplicity, say that it consists of two main components:

Tag: contains a circuit and an antenna that are used to transmit the digital data or information stored in the tag. This data is transmitted as radio waves.

Reader: catches, reads and analyze the radio signals to match the information already present in the database. This helps to identify the user or an object and record the information for tracking purposes.

Some people confuse between smart labels and RFID tags. In simple words, smart label uses both RFID and barcode technologies. Unlike barcodes, tags enabled with radio frequency identification technology can be read from a distance and don’t necessarily need to be aligned with the reader. This means it can be read outside the line-of-sight. Bar-codes are read-only, incapable of sending out any information. RFID tags are essentially bar codes powered with more intelligence.

RFID door locks are commonly used in residential and commercial set-ups (in employee badges) to improve security. But this technology is increasingly finding its way into other areas such as asset tracking, healthcare (tracking patients), contactless payment, travel and smart home products. it’s because these tags can talk to a database to track products, grocery items, people, pets and vehicles.

Benefits of installing RFID locks for your business

Going keyless: You and your employees won’t require to carry a key. Apart from convivence, this also means there would be less chances of keys getting lost, stolen or damaged.

No need of getting a spare key made: It is easy for criminals to catch hold of floating spare keys and gain easy access into your property. With radio frequency identification technology, this possibility goes for a toss. A good thing for you as a business owner. This also translates into cost savings as you don’t need to keep getting locks replaced or rekeyed from time to time.

Better access control with tracking feature: Well, this is the one of the most important benefits of using these locks for your office or store. If your employee enters a room with limited access, the system records all the activity, for example name of the employee, date and time. Tracking provides high levels of security and better control over access.

Better than magnetic swipe cards: Most offices and hotels use magnetic swipe cards. But these systems happen to lose their strength and efficacy after some time. Even the readers are believed to be more prone to damage by dust and spills. This leads to additional costs incurred in repairs and replacement.

Things to consider

It is a great addition to your overall security system but there is no way to check or keep track of other people who may enter along with the employee having the RFID enabled key card. This challenge, however, can be easily eliminated by installing security cameras.
