Ignition LockYou ever get in the car and try to insert the key into the ignition lock only to find that it gets stuck or won’t go in? Or, worse, you turn the key to find that the car isn’t starting?  These can be terrifying experiences, especially if you need your car to reach office or some other place on time. It is possible that you are dealing with a bad or failing ignition lock cylinder. And we’re here to tell you all about what you’re facing and how to overcome it.

That cylindrical tumbler you insert the key into behind your steering wheel shouldn’t be taken for granted as it’s hugely important in starting up and shutting off your car. If there is anything wrong with your ignition lock, you may have issues unlocking your steering wheel, powering up your car’s electrical fittings such as radio, lights, computer and, of course, trouble starting your car.

Faulty of damaged system may show a range of symptoms, from intermittent to more serious ones that can leave you stranded on a road. It is important that you are aware of these symptoms so that you can take care of the issues well in advance before the shutdown happens.

Symptoms of a failing ignition lock cylinder

  1. It’s tough to turn the key

Like most mechanisms, repeatedly turning the key in the ignition switch can lead to substantial wear and tear to both the key and the switch. If you’re having issues turning the key, like having to jiggle it to turn to any of the four positions, or having trouble taking it out, these are good indications of a faulty ignition system. However, it might be a damaged or worn out key that is causing the issue. You can check by using a spare key. If everything works fine with a spare key, it is clear something is wrong with the lock and not your key.

If key is the problem, make sure you get it replaced by your local auto locksmith as soon as you can.  Using a worn key repeatedly will damage the lock cylinder itself because you’ll be compelled to force it in locks or in the ignition. In addition, bent, deformed or a worn key may break off within. Get a new key made before the situation worsens landing you in a tight spot when you are least expecting it.

  1. Your car just won’t start even if the ignition turns

If the engine cranks but the car won’t start, there could be issues with spark plugs, fuel pump, or ignition system. The problem could also be in the anti-theft system, where the car’s computer is not able to identify the key as its own. Again, the key could itself be damaged or it is the faulty ignition switch that is unable to read the key. If the engine is cranking at a much slower pace than usual, chances are there is problem with the starter and not the switch.

However, if engine wouldn’t crank, the underlying problems can be mostly traced to faulty switch, bad starter or dead batteries. Check if your warning lights are flashing or headlights are working. If they are, it is likely that your lock cylinder needs your attention. Whatever the issue, it is recommended that you take your car to the mechanic to determine the exact cause.

  1. Your car starts but stops all of a sudden

It is one of the most common symptoms you would find when there is something wrong with the switch. And this usually happens due to repeated wear and tear, where the electrical contacts within the switch may get damaged. Malfunctioning contacts may disrupt the power supply to the ignition and fuel system and your vehicle suddenly stalls.
