Electrical Safety Tips for Kids

Electrical Safety TipsWell, children are born curious. And obviously they know nothing about how electricity can be dangerous. You don’t want to restrain your kid’s curiosity, but you don’t want any accidents either. What you need to do is make your kids aware of the dangers and how electricity can cause shocks, injuries and even death in certain situations. Here are some simple electrical safety tips that you can share with your kids, once they are big enough to understand.

Electrical safety tips for toddlers

Let’s start with what you can do for your little one, who is still learning to explore the world around him/her.

  • Cover any unused electrical outlets with safety caps.
  • Turn off electrical appliances and remove the plug when not in use.
  • Don’t keep your mobile phone plugged in when you are not around
  • Don’t keep drinks or any fluid on or near your electronic equipment such as TV, laptops, mobile phones, gaming consoles etc.

Electrical safety kids for older kids

While you should never leave your toddler alone around electrical equipment and power plugs, your older kid will understand that practicing electrical safety at all times can keep them safe when they are in house or out playing. And yes, these tips they apply to adults too. So, here is what you should tell your child:

  1. Never put your fingers or other objects into an electrical outlet.
  2. Overloading one power point is dangerous. Don’t let your kid plug-in too many devices in one point and keep a regular check.
  3. Keep an eye on any signs of damage, such as fraying, on electrical cords. Immediately inform adults if you see something.
  4. Never use an electrical appliance near a source of water such as a sink, bathtub or a swimming pool. If you are wet or are in a pool, don’t touch or use any electrical tools or toys.
  5. Never tug on the cord to pull out a plug out of the outlet. Instead, hold the plug when unplugging.
  6. Don’t use any metal containers in the microwave. This goes for gold-lined ceramic dishes and kitchen foil too.
  7. Never climb on power poles
  8. Stay away from power lines at all costs. Don’t climb trees, fly kites or use balloons around the power lines. Flying remote controlled planes and similar objects near power lines is also a big NO.
  9. Fallen power lines are extremely dangerous. Never touch a fallen or downed wire. Ask a grown-up to call a power company and report the incident immediately.
  10. Never go near transformers.
