Everything you should know about electric strike locks

Electric StrikeElectric strike locks are electromechanical locking device, where the traditional strike plate is replaced with a modified version that works with the help of electricity.

An electric strike consists of a movable cavity (also called keeper) that receives the latch bolt when the door is closed. When the strike is electronically activated, the keeper swivels outward, releases the latch bolt, thus opening the door without manual intervention or a physical key. The strike is activated by using a panic bar from the inside or with the help of an electronic access control system such as an access card, key fob reader or a buzzer from the outside.

In other words, you don’t have to manually turn the latch to unlock the door, unlike your typical strike plate. This way, the door remains locked to unauthorized users – offering both high security and convenience.

Uses and applications of electric strike locks

Electric strikes can be integrated with a range of locksets such as cylindrical locks, mortise locks and exit hardware. These locks are commonly used for residential and commercial settings including interior stairwell doors, storefront doors and warehouse entrance.

Selection

Before selecting and installing, your locksmith need to consider a lot of factors; for example, your local building codes and requirements. These codes determine whether you can install a fail-safe or fail secure system. Why is this important? As we now know that these locking devices operate through power. So, a power failure could mean breached security or compromised safety.

A fail secure device means that lock would remain secure (locked) even in the absence of power supply. Here, it needs power to unlock the door, failing which it can only be opened by either turning the latch, using a key or pressing a panic bar from the inside. On the other hand, a fail-safe one means the door unlocks when the power fails, allowing free entry or exit. Here, the device needs power to keep the door locked.

Another factor is to consider the door frame into which the electric strike will be installed. So, your locksmith would pick an appropriate system depending on whether you have a wood door frame, hollow metal frame or aluminium frame. Here, the considering the dimensions of the faceplate matters a lot. And ultimately, you need to make your selection on the basis of locking hardware you are going to use. The good news, they go well with almost every kind of lockset giving you a lot of choice.

They don’t cost a lot to install but you need to be sure that the door frame is solid as the installation often involves cutting the frame. One can also opt for surface-mounted ones. However, other options are available too where installation requires no cutting and the electric strikes could easily adjust with a standard door that is already equipped with a strike plate. If you have a new construction, security and home experts recommend going for locks that are pre-installed as they require less efforts and also last you long. Retrofit scenarios, however, could be a little challenging as it involves extensive modifications to the door such as drilling but with right amount of expertise and experience, this can be easily done.
